A Pensacola Wedding Photographer Dishes What It’s Really Like Being in Front of the Camera

Getting in front of the camera is a funny experience when you’re usually the one holding it. As a wedding and couples photographer in Pensacola Florida, I spend most of my time guiding people, fixing hair, hyping them up, and making sure they feel confident and comfortable. But recently, I flipped the script and stepped in front of the camera myself for some branding photos (it was about time I updated those!), and it completely reminded me what it actually feels like to be the one being photographed.

And honestly? I get it now.

If you’ve ever said “I’m awkward in front of the camera” or “I have no idea what to do with my hands,” you are absolutely not alone.

Why Even a Pensacola Wedding Photographer Gets Nervous in Front of the Camera

I had two branding sessions done recently, one with M. Palmer Photography at Fort Pickens, and another with Katie Rose Photography, and before both sessions I had the same thoughts I hear from my own clients all the time:

  • What if I look awkward?
  • What if I don’t know how to pose?
  • What if I hate every photo?

It’s funny because as a photographer, I reassure couples about these exact fears at almost every session. But standing on the other side of the camera reminded me that those nerves are completely normal.

There’s something vulnerable about being photographed. You’re putting yourself out there, and that can feel intimidating at first.

The First Five Minutes of a Photoshoot Are the Hardest (For Anyone)

Here’s the thing I learned almost immediately:

The nerves disappear so much faster than you think.

Both photographers I worked with made the experience feel effortless. During my session with M. Palmer Photography at Fort Pickens, the energy was instantly relaxed and just like two besties hyping each other up. Fort Pickens is one of the most beautiful beach spots in the Florida Panhandle, and having the ocean breeze, dunes, and sunset light around us made it feel less like a “photoshoot” and more like just hanging out at the beach.

Within the first five minutes, the awkwardness melted away.

That’s the magic of having someone behind the camera who knows how to guide you. When a photographer is giving direction, hyping you up, and making you laugh, you stop thinking about the camera entirely.

Suddenly you’re just existing in the moment.

How a Great Photographer Makes You Feel Comfortable During a Session

My session with Katie Rose Photography felt the same way. Instead of worrying about what I looked like, I found myself laughing, moving around, and actually having fun.

And that’s the biggest takeaway I had from these experiences.

A great photographer doesn’t just take photos… they create an environment where you feel confident. When someone behind the camera is cheering you on, giving you direction, and reminding you that you look amazing, it completely changes the experience.

You forget to be nervous.

You forget to overthink.

You just have fun.

Why This Experience Made Me a Better Photographer

As someone who works as a couples photographer, getting my own photos taken was one of the best reminders of what my clients experience.

It reinforced a few things I always strive to do:

  • Give clear direction so you never feel awkward
  • Keep the energy fun and relaxed
  • Hype you up the entire time
  • Make the session feel more like hanging out than posing

Because the truth is, almost no one shows up to a session feeling completely confident in front of the camera. And that’s okay.

It’s my job to make sure that feeling disappears.

Booking a Photoshoot in Pensacola, 30A, or the Florida Panhandle

If you’re thinking about booking a session with a Pensacola wedding photographer or planning photos somewhere along the 30A Florida Panhandle, but you’re nervous about being in front of the camera: I promise you’re not the only one.

Even photographers get nervous.

But the moment you start moving, laughing, and hearing someone behind the camera say “YES, THAT’S IT,” everything changes. I promise to be your biggest hype girl, and cheering you on the entire time.

Before you know it, you’re not thinking about the camera at all.

You’re just having fun.

And those are always the photos that end up being everyone’s favorites.
